Dear Fran, I give up!!  I am always sending emails, memos and passing on information about compliance, new areas of concern, training opportunities, new ways to involve our employees in their work and anything else I think top management needs to know.  I never get acknowledgement that I have been heard.  Just last week after [...]

Social Media in the Workplace

Dear Fran, We are an established company with a number of long-term employees.  Recently we have been hiring employees in some of the generations new to the workforce.  They are very involved in social media with texting/tweeting and talking about their lives in the public media.  Several of our longer term employees have been reading [...]

Violence in the Workplace?

Dear Fran, I recently attended a HR meeting where they had a consultant speak about how to handle violence in the workplace.  They stated that most businesses have employees with mental health issues and that in cases where those issues resulted in death or trauma, the business was aware of the developing mental health problem.  [...]

Finding Employees in a Booming Job Market

Dear Fran, We are growing, and finding employees has become one of our biggest issues.  Recently an organization that works with people with barriers to employment visited our office and spoke about their pool of applicants.  We have not had a disabled employee before and don’t know what to expect.  Will we have to re-do [...]

There’s Been a Theft, Now What?

Dear Fran, We have a serious situation at work and our management team doesn’t agree on how to handle it.  Our maintenance manager found an expensive tool (that has been missing from the company) at the local pawn shop.  For his records, the pawn shop proprietor takes pictures of everyone with the item they want [...]

Really, there’s no Fun in Dysfunction

Dear Fran, I just started a new job as Office Manager with a company of 30 employees and growing. Some of my duties involve employee issues and human resource compliance. I am so frustrated because if you looked up ‘dysfunction’ in the dictionary, our picture would be next to the word. No one seems to [...]

Are You Constantly Extinguishing HR Fires?

Dear Fran, Sometimes I feel like my job is out of control and all I do is fight employee fires.  It seems that every time I turn around I have another “situation” with employees or another supervisor coming through the door with a problem employee.  We have under 100 employees but are in a small [...]

Setting Goals for your Company

Dear Fran, Last year we implemented a goal based culture for our company.  Now, I am concerned that it may be starting to fall apart and people are losing interest in the concept.  What can we do to keep the process alive and interesting? Dear Concerned, Unfortunately our company goals and objectives need constant attention [...]

Housekeeping. Whose job is it?

Dear Fran, We are a small office of only about 10 people.  We ask all employees to help with housekeeping – replacing paper goods, emptying trash, cleaning the break room, watering the plants, etc.  Because it is not anyone’s job, it doesn’t get done and everyone complains about the mess or running out of supplies. [...]
